Beer Styles Session Part 2: Barleywines

Posted in Bar/Beer Talk on February 27, 2009 by RattleNHumBar

No, it’s not wine. Barleywine is the strongest style of beer. In fact, this tasting would be illegal in over ten states. Some states say there is too much alcohol in these beers. We disagree. These beers are full of flavor and complexity… and of course alcohol.

Join Will Stephens, co-founder of BeerMenus.com and Maggie Fuller, graduate of the UC Davis Master Brewers program and founder of Beer Ethos for a discussion of barleywines and drink their eight favorite examples of the style.

The offering:
-8 barleywines hand-picked by Will and Maggie
-discussion of the style and each beer
-meat/cheese/bread plate
-tasting notes

the-bruery-picCalifornia’s newest brewery lands in NYC at RNH, taste the best they have to offer

The brews will be on tap on the 25th, they will also be on for the 5th of March when you can meet the brewer / owner, Patrick Rue

Orchard White

Orchard White is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned Belgian-style
witbier. This hazy, straw yellow beer is spiced with coriander, citrus
peel and lavender added to the boil and whirlpool. A spicy, fruity yeast
strain is used to add complexity, and rolled oats are added for a silky
texture.

ABV: 5.7%, IBU: 15, SRM: 3, Release: Year Round

Accolades:
BeerAdvocate Magazine, October 2008, “A” Rating

Black Orchard
Black Orchard is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned Belgian-style black
wheat beer, or “black wit”, if you will. This dark but surprisingly
light bodied beer is very drinkable while still having character and
complexity. Chamomile is added for its floral aroma, while the coriander
and citrus peel give the characteristics of a traditional witbier.

ABV: 5.7%, IBU: 15, SRM: 26, Release: Year Round

Accolades:
Los Angeles International Beer Competition 2008, Gold, Belgian & French
Style Ale
BeerAdvocate Magazine, October 2008, “A” Rating

Saison De Lente
Our Spring Saison is light blonde in color with a fresh hoppiness and a
wild and rustic Brettanomyces character. Lighter in color and alcohol
than our Saison Rue, yet equally complex in its own way. Perfect for
warmer weather and Spring celebrations.

ABV: 6.5%, IBU: 35, SRM: 4, Release: Spring

Hottenroth Berliner Weisse
Brewed in memory of my Grandparents (Fred and Sarah Hottenroth), this
tart German-style Berliner Weisse is as authentic as it gets. We used
lactobacillus and a hint of brettanomyces to sour this very unusual, low
gravity wheat beer. To cut the tartness for those with sweeter tastes,
raspberry or woodruff syrup is a traditional way to sweeten the beer.
Almost an extinct style, we hope to help revive the Berliner Weisse in
memory of two great people.

ABV: 3.1%, IBU: 2, SRM: 2

Accolades:
Los Angeles International Beer Competition 2008, Gold, American-Style or
German-Style Sour Ales

Saison Rue
Saison Rue is an unfiltered, bottle conditioned, Belgian/French-style
farmhouse ale. This is a beer of subtlety and complexity, with malted
rye, spicy, fruity yeast notes, biscuit-like malt backbone, and a slight
citrus hop character. With age, this beer will dry out and will become
more complex with rustic notes of leather and earth from the
contribution of a wild yeast strain. Being a Saison, Saison Rue is
ambiguous unto itself as it is a different beer when fresh and when
aged. We hope you enjoy it in all of its incarnations.

ABV: 8.5%, IBU: 30, SRM: 9, Release: Year Round

Accolades:

Style Saison
BeerAdvocate Magazine, October 2008, “A” Rating

Humulus Ambre

A hoppy, Belgian-style amber ale brewed with American hops which give it
a citrusy, piney character. The Belgian yeast character still comes
through with spicy and fruit-forward flavors. (ABV: 5.9%, SRM: 12)

Melange #3

A blend of bourbon barrel aged beers, including an Imperial Stout

(Black Tuesday Imperial Stout), an Old Ale (Papier, our 1st anniversary
beer), and a wheat wine (White Oak). (ABV: 15%, SRM: 20)

Cuvee Jeune

Young American Wild Ale fermented with traditional Lambic flora and

aged in Chardonnay barrels. (Approx. 7% ABVSRM: 4)
